Candidates forum on criminal justice

I received an invitation today from the Communities for Criminal Justice Awareness (a project of the American friends Service Committee) to participate in a forum on criminal justice issues also co-sponsored by the NY Society for Ethical Culture.

The forum will take place at the Society for Ethical Culture, 2 West 64th Street, on Thursday, August 7th starting at 7 pm. It will be moderated by Dean Meminger of NY1.

Candidates will discuss up to three criminal justice issues they plan to address in their campaigns, followed by questions submitted in advance by the public and criminal justice organizations. Questions from the audience may be taken if time permits.

I’m extremely pleased that I have been invited because this will give me an opportunity to discuss the positions of the Green Party and my campaign on rethinking the entire criminal justice system, such as eliminating the needlessly demoralizing stop and frisk program, abolishing the inhumane practice of solitary confinement, and rejecting the for-profit prison system, to name a few issues.

Criminal justice must be about more than punishment.

Governor, Theresa Portelli (Comptroller) and Ramon Jimenez (Attorney General) will also be participating in this forum.
